About Us
Lure of the Wild is a fully-outdoor day camp in the woodlands of Central Maryland. We have two locations – Catonsville and Roland Park. Our state-certified program uses the power of play to help children grow naturally, with careful observation and minimal adult intervention.
Our staff is committed to supporting children’s physical and emotional development while fostering a deeper connection with nature. We aim to expand comfort zones for everyone involved – children, parents, and staff alike.
About the Job
Camp Counselors are seasonal, 40+ hour per week employees from June through August. They create a safe, fun outdoor environment while maintaining communication with camp management and parents. Counselors gain valuable experience relevant to fields like education, psychology, and healthcare. They foster a space where children build resilience through natural exploration and free play in the outdoors.
Key Responsibilities
All Counselors:
- Supervise and mentor campers during activities and free play.
- Facilitate camper decision-making for child-led activities.
- Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all campers.
- Work with fellow counselors and directors to ensure smooth daily operations.
Lead Counselors:
- Assist in preparing for the camp season with pre-camp training.
- Advise and support counselors in day-to-day challenges and interactions between campers, counselors, camp families, and fellow staff.
Junior Counselors:
- Serve as role models for younger campers.
- Assist counselors with camper supervision and safety management
Requirements
- A love for working with children and a passion for outdoor activities.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Clear criminal background check.
- Counselors: Must be at least 18 years old, or 17 and a high school graduate.
- Junior Counselors: Must be at least 16 years old or completed 10th grade.
Salary and Benefits
Counselors:
- Hourly Rate: $17–20/hour.
- Perks: Paid training, attendance and performance bonuses, outdoor leadership experience, and occasional professional training opportunities outside of the camp season.
Junior Counselors:
- Hourly Rate: $15-16/hour.
- Perks: Paid training, attendance and performance bonuses, mentorship, and leadership experience.
